    Real time demonstration of high bitrate quantum random number generation with coherent laser light

    We present a random number generation scheme that uses broadband measurements of the vacuum field contained in the radio-frequency sidebands of a single-mode laser. Even though the measurements may contain technical noise, we show that suitable algorithms can transform the digitized photocurrents into a string of random numbers that can be made arbitrarily correlated with a subset of the quantum fluctuations (high quantum correlation regime) or arbitrarily immune to environmental fluctuations (high environmental immunity). We demonstrate up to 2 Gbps of real time random number generation that were verified using standard randomness tests

    Controlling the Momentum Current of an Off-resonant Ratchet

    We experimentally investigate the phenomenon of a quantum ratchet created by exposing a Bose-Einstein Condensate to short pulses of a potential which is periodic in both space and time. Such a ratchet is manifested by a directed current of particles, even though there is an absence of a net bias force. We confirm a recent theoretical prediction [M. Sadgrove and S. Wimberger, New J. Phys. \textbf{11}, 083027 (2009)] that the current direction can be controlled by experimental parameters which leave the underlying symmetries of the system unchanged. We demonstrate that this behavior can be understood using a single variable containing many of the experimental parameters and thus the ratchet current is describable using a single universal scaling law.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1210.565

    Finite Symmetry of Leptonic Mass Matrices

    We search for possible symmetries present in the leptonic mixing data from SU(3) subgroups of order up to 511. Theoretical results based on symmetry are compared with global fits of experimental data in a chi-squared analysis, yielding the following results. There is no longer a group that can produce all the mixing data without a free parameter, but a number of them can accommodate the first or the second column of the mixing matrix. The only group that fits the third column is Δ(150)\Delta(150). It predicts sin22θ13=0.11\sin^22\theta_{13}=0.11 and sin22θ23=0.94\sin^22\theta_{23}=0.94, in good agreement with experimental results.Comment: Version to appear in Physical Review
